New York Day of Immigrants Rights

Immigrants from the former Soviet Union asked New York state legislators for broadening the rights of Russian-speaking citizens on the Day of Immigrants Rights, February 10.

Members of the American Forum World Congress of Russian Jewry met with New York legislators on February 10.

The sides discussed bills, which would provide for Russian translations of voting papers and translators in electoral districts with large share of Russian-speaking residents.

Further funding of the Chernobyl program (aimed to diagnose struma maligna of immigrants who suffered from radiation effects) was also on the agenda.

The first-ever Russian legislator in America, New York lawmaker Alec Brook-Krasny, actively assisted the organization of the meeting.

His Albany office "has become the headquarters of Russian-speaking lobbyists," the source said.
