Latvian Jews struggle to recover property lost in Holocaust
Local Jewish leaders say that they only want what was stolen to be returned. However, they realize that this may be difficult with current attitudes in Latvia. “Unfortunately, many believe the Latvian Waffen SS who fought against the Bolsheviks were liberators. But they in fact were bandits and robbers,” said Josef Koren, from the World Without Nazism movement. “I have seen documents listing real estate that belonged to Jews killed in ghettos. I think that property should be returned.” The amount of reparations claimed by Latvian Jews is around $65 million.

The rise of neo-Nazism in Eastern Europe is a sign that fascism lives
The Nuremberg Trials laid the foundation of international law as we know it. Nowadays, most of free Europe acknowledges the positive effect of the Nuremberg tribunal. But some nations have a complex relationship with the past. The rise of neo-Nazism in Eastern Europe is a sign that fascism lives.

Anti-fascists not welcome in Estonia
Estonian authorities have banned anti-fascist activists from entering the country. The activists were going to rally against the meeting of Estonian veterans who fought on the side of Nazi Germany. The bus with Lithuanian and Latvian anti-fascists was unable to cross the border between Estonia and Latvia, as the border guards said the bus was in poor technical condition.

NCSJ urges Estonian Gov't to condemn the atrocities of the Waffen-SS
It has come to our attention that on July 31, 2010, the veterans of an Estonian division of the Waffen-SS will be holding a commemorative event in Vaivara. Any official involvement by Estonia in the commemorative activities of such an organization would be unworthy of its status as a free and democratic country, a member of the European Union and NATO, and a trusted friend of its own developing Jewish community. We therefore urge you to condemn the atrocities of the Waffen-SS, and to refrain from affording the honor of your government’s regard to those who perpetrated these crimes.

Anti-Defamation League (ADL) condemned a march, planned for July 31 in Vaivara, Estonia,
Vaivara should evoke mourning and reflection, not celebration. Twenty thousand Jews from across the Baltics were imprisoned in the Vaivara camps, as were other victims and prisoners of war. Every two weeks the Jews who were too sick or frail to work were murdered. Those who march will trample on their memory. A telling choice once again lies before Estonian officials. They, along with responsible members of Estonian civil society, should unequivocally condemn the planned march in Vaivara, ADL says.

"World without nazism" statement on Nazi march in Riga, Latvia
Most alarming is not the demonstration itself, organized by a group of the Nazi ideology followers, but the fact that it was sanctioned by the official authority – judicial branch. Thus, the Court did not stand united with the Riga authorities intending to stop Hitler’s glorifications, but de facto supported in the government’s name this cynical and disgusting event glorifying the beginning of the Latvia’s occupation by the Nazi Germany.

ADL condemns parade commemorating Nazi invasion of Latvia
We appreciate the statement of Latvia’s prime minister and the foreign ministry condemning this event. However, we are concerned that this incident is part of a larger trend among nationalists in the Baltics and elsewhere in Eastern Europe to equate the Nazi genocide with the repression and crimes of the Communists.
