Center of monitoring of xenophobia and anti-Semitism in Eastern Europe
Center of monitoring of xenophobia and anti-Semitism in Eastern Europe
In July 2008 the World congress of Russian Jewry (WCRJ), international NGO devoted on advocating the on behalf of the Russian-speaking Jewish organizations and communities worldwide established The Center of monitoring of xenophobia and anti-Semitism in Eastern Europe on the basis of the European bureau of the WCRJ.
Xenophobia tendencies and, in particular, an anti-Semitism in East European countries still remain considerable problem, with many experts and organizations notice that in some states those problems even amplify. To have possibility to estimate a situation operatively, WCRJ has made a decision on creation of such a centre.
Center branches will be opened in Riga, Prague and Berlin. Centre will also focus on cases of xenophobia and anti-Semitism directed against the Russian-speaking Jewish population of Germany and Russian-speaking Jewish communities of three Baltic States.
Project mission: to establish small expert groups in the countries of East and Central Europe, which would monitor the situation in each country and neighboring states in three ways: a) monitoring of mass-media, b) monitoring of manifestation of anti-semtism and xenophobia in politics, c) in general society. It is necessary to notice that official definitions of anti-Semitism and xenophobia in the various countries differ from each other. For maintenance of successful activity of the center’s branches, they should use «working definition of anti-Semitism» developed by the NGOs and the The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights.
Target group: expert community. Results of work will be quarterly (later, in case of successful development of the project - monthly) published on a project homepage, and also forwarded to subscribers, such as organizations and experts: sociologists, jurists and legal experts.
Once a year a summary brochure containing the experts’ papers will be published. On occasion, if operative reaction to this or that event is required, the information will be processed and published immediately.
Branches: Baltic (Riga, Latvia); East European (Prague, Czech Republlic); the Central European (Berlin, BRD). Further expansion of a network of branches is planned.
WCRJ it will be glad to cooperate with any interested state, private or public organizations. We welcome the possibility of providing of joint projects and we invite interested parties to participate. The struggle against xenophobia and anti-Semitism is our common cause, irrespective of belief, language or occupation.
