Boris Spiegel, the president of the World Congress of Russian Jewry, donated the Torah scroll to the Jewish Agency. The ceremony awarding the scroll took place at the village and was both festive and moving. The Chairman of the Jewish Agency Zeev Bielski attended the ceremony and the scroll was then handed over to the director of the Youth Village, Yossi Krauthammer.

Boris Shpigel is the Deputy Chairman of the Council of Federation Committee for Science, Education, Public Health and Ecology. He is known as a major philanthropist for Jewish causes in Russia and in Israel.

The primary goal of the campaign, launched a month ago, is to raise money to help Russian Israelis who have suffered injuries and psychological trauma in Palestinian terrorist attacks. The campaign´s second goal is to give ordinary Russian Jews a chance to contribute to an important Jewish cause. The campaign is a pioneering venture as never before Jewish community in the post-Soviet Russia started the fundraising for Israel.

The National Great Power Party of Russia (NDPR) was stripped of its official registration by the Ministry of Justice on May 19. The NDPR has thus lost its right to participate in parliamentary elections, where it was not expected to do well, and permits for the party to hold public demonstrations may now be harder to obtain.
